What we ought to do
Arnold Siegel —February 3, 2014

I titled my previous post, “You go for it.” All of us “go for it” in some manner because we are genetically programmed to try to survive. For most people over the many thousands of years of human evolution, trying to survive was the best that they could do. Life was an endless struggle for the next meal and the next safe place to sleep. This is still true for many. Of course, when we are safe, secure, even privileged, our lot is different.

Ours is the challenge at the higher range of the ideals that drive human achievement. When we say we go for it we mean that we want to do what we see fit to do because we want our lives to matter. As such, we believe that the more definitely we know the dynamics of the challenge, the more likely we are to process our intelligence to our satisfaction.

To discover what we see fit to do, we don’t limit ourselves to the “truth” of our immediate programmed responsiveness or to an uncritical default response to the demand for conformity. Guided by the autonomous perspective, we discover what we see fit to do by accepting our responsibility for our humanity and by drawing on our substantive thoughtfulness for creating what we ought to do.
